Actions Speak Louder Than Words

People don’t always believe everything you say about yourself. They watch you. And if you actions and words line up — if what you say and what you do are the same — then they believe you. But if what you do and what you say don’t jive — I mean, if they’re different, then people are going believe what they see, not what they hear. You see, your actions speak louder than your words.

In this part of the play, Andy’s actions, his behavior, show us what he is really like. If he goes out riding shotgun and keeps the shipment of gold safe from bandits along the road, then we know we can trust him. Seeing him act in a trustworthy manner one time builds more trust for the future. If, on the other hand, he says he wants an honest job, says he wants to go straight, but then robs the stagecoach, his words become false.
