Gone fishing?

Where’s the District Attorney? He hasn’t gone fishing, has he? In this episode, Harrington comes looking for the DA, but the DA is not in his office right now. While waiting for the DA, Harrington and the District Attorney’s secretary talk shop. They discuss the case and the medical condition of the policeman who’d been shot.

Going for the big fish:

You’ll recall from two episodes ago that the DA was quite sure Taylor was just a stooge doing the dirty work for someone higher up the ladder than him. It was really someone else more powerful who was digging up dirt on the jury members and feeding it to Taylor to use. That guy — the ‘behind the scenes’ guy — that’s the guy the DA really wants to catch — the big kingpin behind this illegal game. So the DA hasn’t taken a day off. He’s out investigating Taylor’s financial situation, hoping to find new evidence that will lead him to the kingpin.

A new angle:

When the D.A. returns, it looks like his ‘fishing trip’ has paid off. He has financial information leading him to a new angle on the investigation. A canceled debt looks suspicious. It is very likely the way in which Taylor was bought. Most likely, he had borrowed money. Then he met with financial problems and couldn’t pay it back. The man he owed the money to probably did not cancel the debt out of the kindness of his heart, with no strings attached. No, there were strings, all right. His new found financial freedom made Taylor feel indebted to this man. And if the psychological bond wasn’t strong enough, then threats were probably made too. Taylor didn’t have much choice — he didn’t have the money to pay him back, but he could repay him with his service — persuading jurors to vote the way he wanted. The money loaner was the kingpin behind some dirty dealings, the indebted man his stooge.
