“I deduce you live somewhere below, and I know you own a cat which is named, quaintly enough, Ambrose, but where do we go from there?”

What is a Hostage of Love?

“Hostage of Love” is a romance, a love story. Can love take you hostage? A hostage, after all, is someone who is taken captive and used by their captors to negotiate deals to get whatever it is that they want. The hostage’s freedom has been taken away from him. That doesn’t sound much like a love story!  In this story, we don’t have a hostage taking, but in English, we use the word hostage in another way as well. A hostage can be a person who is controlled by something else. It doesn’t have to be a ‘bad man’ that controls the hostage. You might be a hostage to something or of something, like love. So a hostage of love is someone who is overpowered by strong feelings of love. Their emotions control them more than their rational mind. They make choices based on their emotions instead of making the best logical decision. But it’s not so bad — the feeling is great!

“Hostage of Love” will be told in four parts, DL015-DL018.

Scene 1: A cat for a matchmaker

When Francis’ cat, Ambrose, goes missing, Francis has a good idea of where to find him. He is in the habit of wandering off and going to visit a kind neighbor lady who feeds him salmon. But the kind old lady has moved, so Ambrose contents himself with visiting the new tenant, Casey. He takes over Casey’s easy-chair and sits there like a king. When Francis climbs the fire escape to find Ambrose, she meets Casey for the first time. In this scene, we start to form our opinions of what kind of people Francis and Casey are.

Let’s Talk

After listening to the podcast, please comment. Do you have a cat or a dog? If your pet likes someone they just met, do you feel more comfortable being around that person? What do you think of Casey? Should Francis get to know him better? He seems to think he would be a good catch, but would he be? What do you think?

If you have any questions about how to use the vocabulary, feel free to ask about that too.
